MILLIONTH FLIGHT IN 2025: HISTORIC RECORD OF THE SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO AIR TRAFFIC SERVICES AGENCY (SMATSA) AND AIR SERBIA
Air Serbia and the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA) together recorded the millionth flight in 2025, which represents a historic result in domestic and regional air traffic. This record was achieved by the Air Serbia JU 331 flight from Zurich to Belgrade on 12 December, which confirms that the national carrier plays a key role in the growth of Serbian and regional air traffic, as well as that the successful cooperation between Air Serbia and SMATSA is continuously developing in accordance with the increase in operational and technological requirements of modern aviation.
When the airplane entered the airspace of the Republic of Serbia, the air traffic controller, after taking charge of it, congratulated the crew and informed them that their flight was the millionth serviced aircraft under the jurisdiction of SMATSA in 2025. The female pilot captain of the A-319 airplane shared this news with the passengers and informed them that they were witnessing the achievement of a historical milestone.
“It is an immense honour that I led the crew on the millionth flight in 2025. This operation is not just a number, it is a symbol of our commitment and continuous progress. This success speaks of the trust of passengers, the efforts of our teams and the increasing role of Serbia in European air transport. As a female captain, I hope that with this result and my work, I will inspire new generations to follow their dreams, because our achievements show that a career in aviation can be built in Serbia,” said Vesna Aleksić, captain in Air Serbia.
“It is a pleasure to be part of a team that records a historic result. This day is important for SMATSA, Air Serbia, and the wider aviation community, and confirms that there is a capacity to respond to the very complex requests and needs of the users of our services,” said Slobodan Kurćubić, Head of the Terminal and Airport Flight Control Department.
In 2025, Air Serbia saw growth in almost all key business categories. By 8 December, over 4.3 million passengers were carried, which is an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period in 2024, while the total number of flights increased by 4%. More than 2.1 million passengers travelled to and from Belgrade, and the number of departures from the capital increased by 4.1%. August was the busiest month in terms of the number of flights and passengers, while 1 August became a record day with 206 round-trip flights and more than 21,800 passengers in a single day.
Concurrent with the growth of air traffic in the region, SMATSA has been achieving results that have ranked it among the leading air traffic control service providers in the region and among the top ten in Europe for years. This was achieved thanks to the constant increase in demand for air traffic control services, continuous modernisation and increased capacity. In 2025, a 6% increase in traffic compared to the previous year was recorded in the area of jurisdiction, with over 110,000 take-offs and landings at airports in Serbia and Montenegro, over 400 landings and take-offs in one day at Nikola Tesla Airport, more than 4,100 flights per day during the season, and 265 operations in one hour.
The joint results of Air Serbia and SMATSA confirm the growing role of Serbia as an aviation hub and contribute to the further development of regional and European aviation.
